The town of Lake Wylie sits across the South Carolina border from Charlotte, in York County, South Carolina. Lake Wylie Township is located on a peninsula along the shores of Lake Wylie in the Piedmont of both North and South Carolina.
The lake itself is a man-made reservoir, much like Lake Norman. The lake has a surface area of 13,400 acres and features 325 miles of shoreline. Lake Wylie's location on both the South Carolina and North Carolina borders makes it a common recreational destination for residents of nearby cities including Charlotte, Fort Mill, and Rock Hill. Duke Power manages six public boat access areas on the lake. Fishing and boating are popular recreational activities on Lake Wylie.
Lake Wylie has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by humid summers and cool dry winters. Precipitation does not vary greatly between seasons with snow, rain, and sleet in the winter months and mostly rain in the summer months with occasional hail from strong thunderstorms.
As of the census of 2010, there were 8,841 people, 1,458 households, and 1,039 families residing in the CDP. The median income for a household in the CDP was $76,819, and the median income for a family was $88,208. Males had a median income of $50,208 versus $32,679 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $43,567.
